Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. Founded in 1943 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the agency provides assistance to over 130 million people in more than 100 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Assistance is based solely on need, without regard to race, creed, or nationality. CRS maintains strict standards of efficiency, accountability, and transparency, with more than 92 percent of revenues spent directly on programs that benefit the poor overseas. A member of Caritas International, the worldwide network of Catholic humanitarian agencies, CRS provides relief in emergencies and helps communities break the cycle of poverty through sustainable development initiatives in agricultural livelihoods, health, education, microfinance, water and sanitation, and peacebuilding. In Laos, CRS implements programs focused on health, nutrition, water and sanitation, and inclusive development, working closely with government partners, local organizations, and communities to improve livelihoods and resilience among vulnerable populations.
